Women’s Empowerment Program in Sri Lanka

Project details

Are you inspired to become a Women’s Education volunteer in Sri Lanka? International Volunteer HQ’s Women’s Education project offers a fantastic opportunity for passionate and open-minded individuals to support local women in developing skills and achieving self-sufficiency. If you have expertise in areas like English, exercise, nutrition, or other skills to share, it’s a valuable bonus! However, prior experience isn’t necessary, as you’ll work closely with local staff throughout your volunteering journey.

What to expect and how you’ll make an impact

Promoting awareness about women’s education is crucial for challenging gender stereotypes and fostering equality. Understanding the barriers women face encourages greater support for initiatives that empower them, leading to tangible improvements in their opportunities and rights within society. This project is especially suited for individuals with skills or interests in arts and crafts, as well as those passionate about helping women achieve self-sufficiency.

As a volunteer, your responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting with sewing and tailoring training
  • Supporting candle-making workshops
  • Facilitating jewelry creation sessions
  • Guiding cooking training
  • Teaching English, exercise, or nutrition

You can also share various life skills with local women, such as cooking, dancing, hygiene practices, knitting, creating cushions or tote bags, or any other activity you feel would benefit them. If you have a specific skill or activity you wish to introduce, please inform us at least two weeks before your placement begins, and the local team will do their best to help you organize and facilitate it for the women.

Qualified female doctors participating in the Medical or Women’s Education projects in Sri Lanka play a vital role in enhancing women’s health by conducting screenings and leading educational initiatives.

In public hospitals, consultations are free, but patients are usually seen by male doctors, as there is no option to choose. Many female patients feel uncomfortable discussing their health concerns with male doctors, making female volunteers an essential support by offering a safe and welcoming environment for these women.

Please note that during school holidays, many women may be occupied with family responsibilities and unable to attend classes. During these times, volunteers will have the opportunity to teach the children of these women instead.
